English: An important characteristic to distinguish Russula and Lactarius from other types of mushrooms is the consistency of the stipe. In Russula and Lactarius, this breaks like the flesh of an apple, whilst in most other species it only breaks into fibres. The picture shows a Lactarius vellereus of which the stipe was broken by hand. (2005)
