Merge was a mistake

[edit]

Being maybe a little too blunt, but the fact that a) this template is full of lousy piping of sports names instead of displaying the actual names of the leagues when the title is explicitly the leagues, not the sports, and b) includes leagues in what are minor sports in the US & Canada (and minor in the world scene even for sports with notable international spread) alongside some of the most valuable leagues on the world with no indication of their relative significance, tells me this box is poorly organized, and attempts a false balance in an well-meaning but overly slavish attempt at NPOV. Bluntly. There's nothing "major" about Major League Cricket. Although more popular than in the past, cricket is still not a particularly strongly followed sport in the US and Canada, and MLC is hardly a top league in the sport worldwide.

Readers were better served by having the actual Major professional sports leagues of the United States and Canada in their own navbox, or at least set off in a separate section above the others. The distinction between those leagues and the rest is a significant not just economically, but culturally, and to gloss over that, even in a navbox, ill-serves the reader learning about the countries' sporting culture. oknazevad (talk) 16:39, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree for the same reason I left at the TfD. Also, what the heck is ringette? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 05:22, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that TFD was a closer super-vote and the execution was crap. The discussion was "no consensus" at best. The only !vote to support a merge outright said that the other sports don't belong in the box. In other words, he was really saying the merge should have been executed the other way and the bloated with junk template deleted. Just because some random league claims to be the top-level of a sport that is minor at best doesn't mean that belong in a template with the world's richest leagues. oknazevad (talk) 19:25, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, one major observation: some of the things listed were not leagues. Being the national championships of individual sports are individual annual events, not leagues, the scope of this template. They need to go. oknazevad (talk) 19:49, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
