What is this template really supposed to be about?
[edit]The name of this template suggests the cold war (c. 1947 – c. 1991) yet |title=US submarine classes after 1945
. Is there not a conflict between these two?

- Navboxes often expand beyond their creators' original intent. Alternatively, they just chose a short, easy-to-remember title at a time when shorter filenames were deemed better, or weren't knowledgeable enough about post-WWII and the Cold War to understand that there was a difference. If you don't have an issue with a navbox covering post-1945 US submarine classes, just be bold and rename it, probably to Template:US submarine classes after 1945. - BilCat (talk) 15:22, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- Because this template was created well after the end of the cold war, I assume, perhaps wrongly, that the intent of the original editor was to limit this template solely to cold war era submarines. That makes some reasonable sense to me because the c. 1947 – c. 1991 dates put a limit on the size of the nav box whereas some sort of classes-post-1945 is open-ended. Were it up to me, I would not move this template but would change the title and remove those classes that weren't built during the cold war. That then suggests the need for a post-cold war nav box.

- There are only two legitimate post-Cold War classes - Virginia and Columbia (if one considers the Seawolf class as Cold War, which is when it was developed), and probably none between 1945 and '47 that wouldn't be considered Cold War anyway. Replacement for the Virginias is still decades away, so it's not likely to expand further for a long time. Renaming seems to make the most sense to me at this point. - BilCat (talk) 15:59, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- From looking at the navbox's history, the navbox always carried the title "US submarines after 1945". It appears to have been copied overb from Template:ColdwarSovietSubmarines, which was renamed as Template:Soviet and Russian submarines after 1945 in 2013. - BilCat (talk) 16:08, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
