I really like your positive and uplifting vibe at places like the Help Desk or the Village Pump. It makes my mood better, and I assume it's the same for other editors. Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! TheWikiToby (talk) 20:55, 21 November 2024 (UTC) |
I will always treasure this barnstar — not just because it's my 1st (could be my last!) but also because it's very touching. To me, the Wiki tradition of giving barnstars is a symbol of the joy we find in sharing construction of the world's largest encyclopedia. Despite occasional outbursts arising from our differing individual insights, the Wiki mission helps keep us at a higher level on life's humbling learning curve.
The warm glow of having been awarded this barnstar made me aware that it was time for me to begin doing the same. Barnstars are a delightful way to recognize and encourage the amazing gifts and contributions I keep finding among Wikipedia editors. And much more picturesque than a simple thank-you!

* This user is a "rare bird" because she was born and raised in Washington, DC, thus refuting the belief that DC has no natives.
* This user has an EdD, Instructional Design; an MA, Sociology; and a BA, History. She focuses on using her final degree to foster learning and life skills.
* This user is a lover of animals and nature, trains and boats, recycling and repurposing, and environmental stewardship.
* This user is also a lover of folk songs, camp songs, and spiritual music. Plus campfires. Oh, and also good puns.
* But she tries to keep a balanced detachment from the little delights of this world, aware as she is of a higher plane on which we’re invited to live. Even though coffee is a hard one!
* Perhaps some day she'll learn how to turn the above self-descriptions into userboxes ...

MY ORIGINAL WRITE-UP AS A BRAND NEW EDITOR
Hello, Wiki world. I'm a transplanted American on the other side of the globe.
How I got my "Wiki handle" ... around the same time I came on board with Wikipedia, I'd been looking at Iceland Air's website a lot to get some flight information, and I found it so cute what the airline kept flashing on the screen in the few seconds between my making a request for flight information and when it would arrive: "Augnablik: that means just a second in Icelandic, literally 'blink of an eye.'" That's my only connection to Iceland, if you can call it that!
I've done a lot of proofreading and editing over my life, though I identify more as an educator, instructional designer, and writer. But I'm one of those picky people who react to egregiously awful grammar, punctuation, and spelling — as well as lack of clarity and coherence — the same way as if I heard nails screeching down a chalkboard.
I have to laugh at my title of being a "confirmed extended" novice editor, as I'm definitely over-extended on many days. Which is why long gaps have sometimes gone by between my posting of messages or edits.
Tip of the day...
Accuracy, quality and peer review
We strive to make Wikipedia as accurate and as good as possible. If you see something you know is wrong, be bold and fix it. If you see something that seems wrong, leave a note on the article talk page and remove questionable assertions if no supporting evidence is provided. You can also use a verification template to add a citation needed tag after the text in question. Peer review for accuracy and quality happens constantly through the Recent changes page and watchlists. A review can also be solicited on Wikipedia:Peer review, Wikipedia:Article assessment, and Wikipedia:Good article nominations. If you believe an article is really good, nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. More sophisticated approval mechanisms are under constant discussion. Regardless, we do not guarantee accuracy and have a variety of other disclaimers. These are linked from every page, so please do not add more disclaimers to articles! There is a semi-automated peer review available. The easiest way to install the script is to enable it as a Gadget: go to your user Preferences and check off the MoreMenu, adds Page and User dropdown menus to the toolbar... entry under Appearance and hit save. Each article page will then have a Page and User pull down menu near the top; go to the article; hover on Page; hover on Tools; click on Peer reviewer. – – To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd3}}
