VIN cloning

[edit]

Please stop posting photos that show the full VIN on vehicles. See this report about VIN cloning. I suggest that you remove/blur all VINs in any photos that you have already posted. Nyth63 13:34, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I've revised my pics to remove the VIN. Expandinglight5 (talk) 02:56, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There does not appear to be any official policy addressing this even obliquely, it just seems to me to be better to err on the side of caution. I just created a new article on VIN cloning about the problem. I started a discussion at the Village pump but so far, no one else seems to care. Maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill. Anyway, I appreciate you at least considering that this is a potential problem and taking some positive action rather than blowing me off. Nyth63 11:59, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this, as someone who read and added extra citations to the article when it was first posted, I'll explain: the problem with the article is that it doesn't prove that the company is notable enough to qualify for a Wikipedia article. That link goes to a guide, but basically any coverage of a company on here is supposed to be based on being covered in reliable sources, like newspapers, in the form of full articles and not just things like business listings. So if you know of coverage of the company, I recommend adding it asap with the cite tool. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this. Blythwood (talk) 18:00, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DeLorean

[edit]

Then you'd better remove the subsequent references to the DMC-12 from the section on the DMC-24, which refers to it. General Ization Talk 04:41, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also see the cited content at DMC DeLorean: "As development continued, the model was referred to as the DSV-12 and later the DMC-12 ..." General Ization Talk 04:43, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Those are pre-production monikers. The car was never sold as anything but a "DeLorean." If you have found other errors in the article, you are free to edit and correct. Expandinglight5 (talk) 04:44, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Preproduction or no, there are many references to the vehicle as DMC-12 to distinguish it from other models of DeLorean vehicles. The current structure makes it pretty clear it is an alternate (and apparently commonly-used) name, so I'd suggest leaving it as it is now. General Ization Talk 04:50, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If something is erroneously given the incorrect name, it is not justifiable to include it as encyclopedic content. The correct name is the DeLorean and should be the only name listed in an encyclopedia. Consensus has been previously reached on the DMC DeLorean page. In addition, there was only one production model made by the DeLorean Motor Company. Other "models" are simply sketches or ideas and should be listed as prototypes/concepts to avoid confusion.Expandinglight5 (talk) 04:54, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Interior Honda CRX photo removed

[edit]

Hi, you removed the interior CRX photo because in your opinion it's low quality. Is it better to have no interior picture than a low quality one, genuinely curious? And 2, would you consider an improvement if I cut out the blurry dark bottom part where I have a box of food visible, as that would leave the focus more on the interior itself? Photographs should be of the same value and quality found in an encyclopedia. Expandinglight5 (talk) 04:22, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So in your big brain you think that even a RARE ITEM like a 40 year old car deserves no picture rather than a medium-quality one??? What's wrong with having a medium quality picture until someone manages to take a higher quality one? What if that moment never comes?? Groaznic (talk) 21:29, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Carlsbad Raceway moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Carlsbad Raceway, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. I need to ask you a question

[edit]

Hello, Expandinglight5. In the month of May, I changed the title of the article about the DMC DeLorean in several Wikipedias, including the Galician edition, the Portuguese edition and the Castilian edition. I need to ask you on which page of the used book does it say that the DMC-12 name was removed, because I have seen people changing the car's name not only on this English wiki, but also on the Portuguese wiki. When you tell me the page, I will add it to the articles. If you find more sources I think that would be fine, you could add some more, because in most websites the name DMC-12 used in one of the prototypes appears. I wait your answer. --Mark Gasoline (talk) 11:12, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is a long discussion on the talk page of the DMC DeLorean page. It's archived. Essentially, the DMC-12 was a code name during development. The official name of the vehicle is the DeLorean not DMC-12. Nowhere on the vehicle is it badged a "DMC-12" and most importantly the Monroney sticker indicates the model name of the car as the DeLorean. Expandinglight5 (talk) 05:24, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I absolutely agree with that, apart from that already in 2006, in summer (when I began to find out information about this beautiful but controversial and underpowered model) it seemed strange to me that in many places they call it DMC-12 but that it does not put that name on the car. And besides, i also agree with what James Espey from DMC replied via email. But MartinezMD (talk · contribs) commented this to the user Timnmnangers (talk · contribs) (you know, who proposed the name change in late 2018):
While you may very well be right, WP:PSTS favors secondary sources over primary sources. Espey's information would be useful only if printed in a reliable source, not a direct communication with us individually (which would be considered original research) - e.g. a letter published in Road & Track, an addendum to the current DeLorean company's website FAQ section, etc. Something like that would warrant reversing the current naming summary and history. MartinezMD (talk) 22:43, 18 December 2018 (UTC).
What the article indicates that the DMC-12 name was dropped in the late 1980 needs at least one reference to prove it. If that's indicated in the DeLorean Stainless Steel Illusion book, that already serves as a source; although I believe that, in a case like this where a name is used incorrectly so many times at many websites, it is necessary use one more source. It is a matter of time before readers of wikis in Portuguese, Castilian, etc., begin to ask on the talk pages why the name was changed, and the best way to respond is to provide sources.
And also, I plan to communicate with users of other wikis to see if I can get them to put the correct name in the articles, so I also need more sources. The case of this car is really striking, the vast majority of websites use the name DMC-12, but it does not put any of that in this car. This is a rare case that catches my eye, which is why I like the aesthetics of the DeLorean (it is extravagant but very elegant, and i like strange things), even knowing that it is very slow accelerating. I look forward to your reply again, but please, better reply on my talk page. --Mark Gasoline (talk) 13:35, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are multiple sources beyond stainless steel illusion. Articles in Road & Track and other sources from the time are cited in the previous talk discussion that is archived. Take a look at the archived discussion and if you still need more resources, I'll see what else I can find. Expandinglight5 (talk) 17:52, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the link to the archived discussion: https://wiki.eso.workers.dev/wiki/Talk:DMC_DeLorean/Archive_1#Suggest_changing_the_name_of_the_car,_adding_explanation Expandinglight5 (talk) 18:01, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've been looking at all the sources listed on the talk page, but I still think the books are necessary too. You said you have books about the DeLorean, look in the indexes for information on the history of the model before production started, and point me to the pages where it says that the name DMC-12 was removed in 1980. Remember that name is used incorrectly in many websites. What I told you above about communicating with users of other wikis to remove the DMC-12 name from the titles is serious, but some more sources (in books) are good for us, the PDF documents I do not think are enough (the DMC-12 name was even mentioned in television shows referring to the production model). Take your time, I believe that in less than five days you will be able to find more sources. A couple of books is enough. Then I will add the sources in the article of this wiki and in several others, such as Galician, Catalan, etc., and I will write the messages in the talk pages of the other wikis where I have not changed the name yet. --Mark Gasoline (talk) 13:29, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Like all of us here at Wikipedia, I'm a volunteer. That research will take some time and I'll share my findings when I can. Expandinglight5 (talk) 15:19, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I have no problem waiting. Greetings. --Mark Gasoline (talk) 20:18, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion

[edit]

Why did you reverse the edits in DMC DeLorean? What is indicated here appears in the reference I added, and this I do not think needs reference, because those lights are seen in several photos of the article. --Mark Gasoline (talk) 23:32, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

On articles with GA status, everything should be cited. Expandinglight5 (talk) 03:43, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Empty categories

[edit]

Hello, Expandinglight5,

You have created a number of categories that are currently empty. Except for a few limited categories (listed in the notices), empty categories are deleted if they are still empty after a 7 day waiting period. If they are no longer empty during this week, the tag will be removed. Categories that are deleted simply for being empty can always be recreated should there be a need for them in the future. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 16:01, 15 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on articles that would utilize these as well as linking some existing articles that need to be linked. I don't think I'll get to it over the next 7 days so as long as I can re-add at a later date, I'm fine if you choose to delete items not currently being used. Thanks for letting me know. Expandinglight5 (talk) 18:49, 15 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article The Hobbit (pinball) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable product, single-source. Google search finds less than 90 hits, practically all unusable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:18, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Hobbit pinball had been identified on the WikiProject Pinball page as a task. The Hobbit films and Lord of the Rings franchise is widely known and popular. Expanding areas relating to these franchises help further explain the significance of items related to the franchises as well as the franchise themselves. The article is marked as a stub article and I hope other users will add to the article in the future. I agree the article needs improvement however I feel it should not be deleted. Expandinglight5 (talk) 18:06, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks for stating your point of view. However, I do not judge the article by its current poor state, but by a search (see above) for sources, which revealed that documenting the article properly -- with reliable independent secondary sources -- would be very difficult as there are extremely few usable sources out there. That could change, but given the age of the subject and the continuing lack of interest in it by scholars or independent commentators, it does seem unlikely that it will suddenly leap into notability. Or perhaps you know of some independent sources that I've not seen? If you can list multiple reliable sources (here or on the talk page), then the matter is closed. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:55, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Secondary sources on pinball are few and far between. Books are published/updated every few years at best. The most recent versions that I'm aware of were published prior to the release of the Hobbit so we'd have to wait for the next publication in order for this to be addressed. Barring a resurgence in Hobbit/LOR popularity which would be driven by another form of media, I don't expect search results to change in the near future for this machine. That said, I feel notability is as much driven by the theme (The Hobbit) than the actual pinball machine itself which would be quite strong. Expandinglight5 (talk) 17:59, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for explaining. I guess it's clear that possible future sources do not establish notability today. Similarly, notability is not inherited. The fact that the book is notable does nothing to confer notability on the game, so at the moment we have no evidence of notability at all and we believe there is none in existence in the world. In that case there is no alternative to deletion, though an article could be re-created if sources emerge one day. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:03, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've added some additional data / sources to the article to hopefully add further notability to the article. I'll continue to work on it over the coming days/weeks. Ideally other Wikipedia volunteers can add to the article as well. Expandinglight5 (talk) 03:22, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:47, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello editor, do review my draft Draft:Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo. It has previously been reviewed by a number of editors with recommendations well taken into consideration. Michelin stars

[edit]

Hello! First, let me thank you for improving so many restaurant entries on Wikipedia. I see your name in my watchlist often and appreciate when you expand upon some of the stubs I create. I have a request, though: can you please not remove mention of restaurants receiving Michelin stars? This is a notable milestone in a restaurant's history, whether or not the status is current. Thank you so much! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:05, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For current restaurants, it should only be listed in the infobox as Michelin rated if the rating is current. A Michelin star is only valid for one year. If a restaurant used to be rated it's fine to be in the article as part of it's history but the infobox should represent current information, same as address. Please note, there is a difference between being listed in the Michelin Guide and having a Michelin star.

For closed/defunct restaurants, I think it's fine to list in the infobox as it is it's final rating as the restaurant is categorized as closed/defunct. Hopefully you're in agreement. Expandinglight5 (talk) 22:18, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Even for restaurants which have closed, or have lost star status, we should note when stars were awarded as part of the restaurant's history. This helps demonstrate notability. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:09, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. But the lead paragraph for active restaurants should not reference the restaurant as Michelin-starred if it isn't current. I think it's fine for closed restaurants that were Michelin starred at the time of closure. Expandinglight5 (talk) 23:11, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see what you mean! Thanks again for improving so many entries, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:23, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bold text in opening sentence

[edit]

Hello! I don't feel strongly about this, and I'm not going to revert your changes, but I had removed bold text in the opening sentences of the restaurants lists per MOS:AVOIDBOLD, which says, "If the article's title does not lend itself to being used easily and naturally in the first sentence, the wording should not be distorted in an effort to include it. Instead, simply describe the subject in normal English, avoiding unnecessary redundancy."

Perhaps you disagree and that's fine!, just wanted to explain my thinking. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:10, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback. I was going based on the style guidelines of the first sentence which indicates among other things the first occurrence of the title ... are placed in bold. Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Lead_section Expandinglight5 (talk) 18:21, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I get it, but the list titles are not the names of the subjects. They are lists, but they are not discussing lists of restaurants. I dunno, not a big deal, I just don't see the bold text as highlighting the name of the subject. ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:23, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
