Administrators' newsletter – August 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2022).
- An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
- An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.
- The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
- Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)
- The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.
- You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.
- Wikimania 2022 is taking place virtually from 11 August to 14 August. The schedule for wikimania is listed here. There are also a number of in-person events associated with Wikimania around the world.
- Tech tip: When revision-deleting on desktop, hold ⇧ Shift between clicking two checkboxes to select every box in that range.
New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022
Hello Lee Vilenski/Archives/2022,
- Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.
- Coordination
- MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
- Open letter to the WMF
- The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
- TIP - Reviewing by subject
- Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
- New reviewers
- The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
- To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

The Reviewers Award | ||
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this award in recognition of your continuing to carry out thorough, detailed and actionable reviews at FAC. This work continues to be very much appreciated. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:03, 1 August 2022 (UTC) |
- Hi Gog the Mild, thanks for this! I haven't been as active as I'd like, but I will get back to the review train soon. On a slightly different note, I currently only have one FAC listed which is quite well discussed (2016 World Snooker Championship). Any chance I could put another one in the furnace? It seems like the only outstanding issues is the formatting of sources. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 09:11, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

- Typical isn't it, I seek out two qualified admin candidates and prep them thoroughly for a good nom, then the power goes to their head and they start closing them. [FBDS] Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:13, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
I do realize I am very late, almost too late to the party, but when you close an RfA (at least from what I've seen/heard), you should remove the line that says " Voice your opinion on this candidate (talk page)". Your draft article, Draft:Xavier Gretillat
Hello, Lee Vilenski. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Xavier Gretillat".

Regarding Dan Cherek
Hello! Recently I noticed, that my family member Anatolii Dimarov's wiki page was cleaned of all of it's information. Almost all of the information about him was removed and he was worded as a Russian writer by Dan Cherek. However, he was a Ukrainian writer and a patriot. This was done on the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th and I believe that this was a horrible mistake or an anti-Ukrainian act. I edited the page back to its original state however my family and I feel offended about the treatment of our deceased family member by Dan Cherek and require an explanation. Thank you! GlizzyGobblerHetman (talk) 00:12, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- (Hi, Lee!) It looks like this is about Anatoliy Dimarov, where I reverted some unattributed translations a few months ago while doing some copyright checks but didn't notice that the revert included an inapplicable {{Russia-writer-stub}} that had previously been placed by another editor. DanCherek (talk) 02:18, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi GlizzyGobblerHetman - looks like Cherek added the wrong template to the article which is now fixed. What's more pressing is that if this is a family member, you should not be editing their page directly as you have a conflict of interest. You should instead leave edit requests on the talk page. What's more, despite this person being deceased, we still require that the sourcing of this article be stronger than that of any non-biographical article, and require all claims to be well cited, (see WP:BLP). Slightly Early Closure of Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/DanCherek
Hello Lee and greetings to you. I wanted to let you know that the RfA of Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/DanCherek, which you had closed was closed slightly early. It was scheduled to end at 19:22 UTC on 9th August but it was closed by you at 18:38 UTC which means that it was closed around 44 minutes earlier. Although this RfA was obviously going to pass, I fully believe that no normally running RfA should be closed early (even by 1 minute) before its scheduled end time and it should run for the complete duration of 7 days minimum. There can be other RfA's which might be borderline cases and there can be people who just might !vote at the very last minute before its scheduled end time which might give additional information and/or change consensus which can make or break an RfA. I just wanted to let you know about this as this was your first RfA closure. I hope you and all other bureaucrats will take a note of this important thing from now on. Thank you. TheGeneralUser (talk) 11:20, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi. Yes, I was aware of this. See a couple of threads above. This wasn't a closing early issue, it's that BST and UTC aren't the same and I got mixed up. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 11:34, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Question about the draft of an article
I had a question, can you transfer the draft of this article that I created in the English Wikipedia to the main space after reviewing it, of course, if it is accepted by your Excellency, I have translated this article in the Persian Wikipedia and it has There is a wiki and reliable sources, the reference of this draft is Farsi sites, please see those sites and translate to English to create the least problem in the draft. - If you article is accepted through the AfC process, then it will be placed in mainspace. However, it is unlikely to do so as it is lacking in citations showing this person is notable.
