[edit]Good day, thank you for being my mentor. I would like to contribute by making verified edits and also create reputable pages. Could you help support that process? --Jemmy Smith (talk) 21:39, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that is what we are here to do. If I can't help directly, I should be able to find someone who can. Good luck, and call me when you need the help. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 03:23, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
Requested move, over redirect
[edit]Please move Outline of the Kennedy family to Draft:Outline of the Kennedy family.
I'd do it myself, but there's a redirect in the way.
Somebody deleted it by redirect, rather than move it back to draft space. Looking around Wikipedia at the subject, there appears to plenty of Kennedy-related articles to justify an outline. It just ain't ready for prime time yet. For example, in the titles held section, it doesn't identify who held each title. Definitely still a draft.
Cheers, — The Transhumanist 09:20, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that it should not have been stealth deleted by redirect, and has potential, so will move to draft as requested.· · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:33, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Done. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:54, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

- how in the world do you memorize all those help pages????????? Leonardo da vin (talk) 16:43, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Actually I don't. I just know that there is probably a help page on a topic, type in what seems a likely shortcut or page title, and if that doesn't work, do a quick search. Also useful is to go to any help page and look in the Template:Wikipedia help pages navbox for the topic I need. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:10, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

Question regarding how to conduct a dispute
[edit]In conducting a dispute on another editor's contribution, is it appropriate to first revert the contribution/remove the content and then begin a talk to get consensus to restore it? Or is it correct to instead tag the content in the article as disputed and then begun a dispute in the article's talk page to get consensus to remove it? I have gotten conflicting answers to this when consulting the relevant articles (WP:TALKDONTREVERT, WP:STONEWALLING seem to support the latter) and asking others on the topic (who seem to support the former) and would appreciate your insight! Sxbbetyy (talk) 17:31, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- It depends on the disputed material. If it is a breach of copyright or contravenes the requirements for biographies of living people, it must be removed immediately, with an appropriate edit summary. If it is a dispute of factual accuracy, it depends on the strength and reliability of the sources. When the change is strongly supported by a reliable source, it is usually appropriate to make the change without prior discussion, provide the reference with it, and leave a suitable edit summary. Also, an unsourced claim may be removed without prior discussion if there is plausible reason to believe that it is inaccurate (you must be able to explain your reasoning if challenged). Where the dispute is on interpretation or there are conflicting sources of equivalent reliability, the change should be discussed first. Tagging the disputed content and opening a discussion on the talk page is seldom wrong when you have any doubt. Personal opinions of editors carry no decisive weight on Wikipedia, even if they claim to be an authority, but they should not be dismissed arbitrarily - they may be right. Evidence is required to settle content disputes. When in doubt, ask someone for an independent opinion, but in those cases it is usually helpful to provide links and diffs so they can read up on the background of the specific dispute, as best practice varies depending on the circumstances. Disputes over relevance, neutrality and weight are usually best discussed first, as these are often matters of opinion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:52, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response, that clarifies things quite nicely and just about matches what I thought was the expectation. As a follow up question, how would one go about handling situations where another editor decided to not follow that expectation and has instead chosen to prematurely remove disputed content that warrants discussion first (including if they engage in edit warring to keep it removed prior to a consensus being reached on its removal)? Sxbbetyy (talk) 17:00, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- First try to engage the editor in a discussion on the talk page to find out why they chose to handle it that way. When explaining you own actions, try not to rely on a wall of shortcut links, rather use a few more words to be more specific, and quote the actual text of any policy or guidance you base your position on. Bludgeoning with shortcut links seldom explains anything, and relies on the reader making the same assumptions that you made, which is seldom the case in a dispute. If they cannot explain their behaviour satisfactorily, you can ask for a neutral third party to assess the situation, and if necessary, report on the incident at WP:AN/I. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 04:05, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
