Hi Theon. I was hoping you might be able to help me figure out if someone is perpetrating a hoax on Wikipedia, and if we are perpetrating it to the world. Canadian Space Agency has a list of Canadian astronauts, including Daffyd Williams. Daffyd does not have a NASA biography. Then again, neither does Roberta Bondar. It looks like they don't have profiles of past international astronauts. A google search for "Daffyd Williams" astronaut [1] finds only Wikipedia mirrors and a single McGill University page mcgill_interview_handbook.doc that says that our friend Daffyd flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in April, 1998. Looking at List of space shuttle missions and cross-referencing with NASA's page, it looks like Columbia did not fly at this time. So why is the McGill Faculty of Medicine saying this guy was a mission specialist? I just want you to double check my info before I decide that this guy doesn't exist. moink

Does NASA quote metric values in their original data? It would be much better to get the values from NASA than having to do conversions. I would be happy to look it up if you could give me the page references. In any case, I thought NASA is supposed to be pushing metric now after the MCO disaster. Bobblewik

Thanks for the reference and the tilde tips. Bobblewik Bobblewik 16:22, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Your initiative in creating new articles is admirable, but please don't create pages with just an empty template - they say less than an actual article (It's a little misleading too, a blue link looks like it has information). If you want to make a new page, please provide some rudimentary info first. See Wikipedia:Stub article. Thanks! :) Dysprosia 22:09, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Just had a thought - would it be good if the Previous mission / Next mission table was made part of the table to the right? I think that would look better, but it would be a heck of a lot of effort to change them all, sadly... thoughts? Evercat 22:10, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Well, I did what I envisage it looking like... Evercat 23:08, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

OK, my mistake. The text does need cleaning up though, it can't just be left as it was pasted and copied from another website. -- Graham  :) | Talk 22:10, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Would it be possible for you to construct a boilerplate to put onto articles that you create from that source, stating what the copyright status is? It would help allay confusion with other users in the future. -- Graham  :) | Talk 02:12, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I am not sure I am comfortable listing the various shuttle missions as complete on the Wikipedia:Wikiproject Space Missions page as none of them have a mission parameters section and a number have the navigation bar in the wrong place (although that appears to be Evercat's change) If you want to change the template please discuss it at the project with the other project members. Rmhermen 18:08, Mar 30, 2004 (UTC)

According to the template:

Mass: (mass) Perigee/Perilune/etc.: (perigee) Apogee/Apolune/etc.: (apogee) Inclination: (inclination) Period: (period) should go in the Parameters section not the box (although orbits does go in box) Rmhermen 18:17, Mar 30, 2004 (UTC)

Airboxes

[edit]

Hey noticed your link for the air-box. Intially it was just going to be for actual aircraft pages, but its expanded, and Im worried its getting to large in scope. When I put years in avation, that even seemed a strech. Iv been mulling over a more general one with that has more links like aviation history, etc. for all the more non-technical pages- what do you think of this? Maybe we could work on one for space stuff as well (like rockets, missions, etc?). Greyengine5 16:43, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Theon, thanks for the (polite) warning on page layout I have referred the discussion to the page layout page you suggested. --BozMo 17:38, 11 May 2004 (UTC) however you may need to get that page to talk to this one WikiPedia:WikiProject_Leaders_by_year which seems to imply page layout changes aswell--BozMo 17:49, 11 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Image repository

[edit]

Hi, I just learned about your start of an image repository (Wikipedia:List of images). Independently of you, I have also started one, with a slightly different idea in mind (Images in Wikipedia). My idea is to include essentially all images in wikipedia, and to have a set of hierarchical galleries that lead from very broad categories to finer categories. I would like to invite you to talk about how this is best done, where to put these articles, and how to incorporate them with your article Wikipedia:List of images. See also the discussion on Talk:Images in Wikipedia. Wilke 01:18, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Dog images

[edit]

Noticed your formatting cleanup in Wikipedia:List of images/Dogs; thanks. But I'm wondering why you're moving them out of alphabetical order? Even though it makes maintenance a bit more hairy (change rows every time more photos are added), I think alpha order is ultimately more useful, no? (See also its talk page.) Edward Gibson

[edit]

Hi. I've just entered some basic corrections in Edward Gibson. Please note: the title phrase or title word should be highlighted at its first appearance, like this, and one should use complete sentences. The latter is something in the article that still needs work. Michael Hardy 22:16, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Thanks for uploading Image:Srb_16.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Space missions WikiProject

[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you are a member of the Space missions WikiProject. A couple of weeks ago, I proposed that the Space missions and Space travellers projects, which both appear to be inactive be merged into the Human Spaceflight project. Whilst this is being done, the capitalisation of the Human spaceflight project's title would also be corrected (ie. Human SpaceflightHuman spaceflight). The projects are all doing the same/very similar things, and in my opinion, a single, larger, project would be more effective than three smaller, and somewhat inactive projects.. In light of very little response to messages on the project talk pages, I am now sending this message to all members of all three projects, inviting them to discuss the proposal on the Human Spaceflight project's talk page. I would appreciate your opinion on this. Thanks. --GW_SimulationsUser Page | Talk 21:57, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Theon! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 18 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 7 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the unreferencedBLP tag. Here is the list:

File source problem with File:STS-57-crew.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:STS-57-crew.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:53, 26 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. FASTILYsock(TALK) 06:53, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there! As part of an effort to determine how many active editors are present in the spaceflight-related WikiProjects, I have made some changes to the list of members of WikiProject Human spaceflight. If you still consider yourself to be an active editor in this project, I would be grateful if you would please edit the list so that your name is not struck out - thus a clearer idea of the critical mass of editors can be determined. Many thanks in advance!

Hello there! As you may or may not be aware, a recent discussion on the future of the Space-related WikiProjects has concluded, leading to the abolition of WP:SPACE and leading to a major reorganisation of WP:SPACEFLIGHT. It would be much appreciated if you would like to participate in the various ongoing discussions at the reorganisation page and the WikiProject Spaceflight talk page. If you are a member of one of WP:SPACEFLIGHT's child projects but not WP:SPACEFLIGHT itself, it would also be very useful if you could please add your name to the member list here. Many thanks!

Unspecified source for File:SSME2.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:SSME2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:55, 14 December 2011 (UTC). Proposed deletion of Gary Payton (astronaut)

[edit]

The article Gary Payton (astronaut) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced BLP

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Plagiarism on STS-47 Article

[edit]

Hey Theon,

I'm not sure how active you are now on Wikipedia, but it seems back in the day you were very ambitious in creating new Wikipedia articles about spaceflight and space exploration. Some of your articles have gone on to become featured articles on the English Wikipedia, which you partly deserve kudos for. What I take issue with is that when you began these articles, you often just plagiarized information directly from whatever NASA factsheet they had published for an astronaut or a space shuttle mission, for example, and then just left it there without summarizing or paraphrasing, or even including inline citations. Granted, you did most of your work in 2004, and its likely that the rules were much looser and relaxed back then. The thing is, you probably expected someone would change your work after the fact to make the article not contain plagiarism from a public source. In the case of articles like STS-47, that someone never came. I guess I'm just trying to say that times are different now, and while its not your fault that no one changed your work, it is your fault that you plagiarized information and passed it off as Wikipedia's, even if the source makes their information available to the public domain. You probably don't even remember creating the STS-47 article, among others, but if you could try to fix what you plagiarized, that would be great, and I think the people who worked and served on this mission would be grateful too. I'm just a fellow editor, enjoy your day. SpacePod9 (talk) 00:19, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
