DYK for Don Bragg (basketball)
On 5 November 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Don Bragg (basketball), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Korean War allowed Don Bragg to set a UCLA basketball record for the most rebounds by a varsity freshman, which stood for almost 40 years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Don Bragg (basketball). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Don Bragg (basketball)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Terrible leads

⋅ —Bagumba (talk) 15:52, 7 November 2024 (UTC)- Ickk, I don't like that either. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 15:55, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

Bronny James LA Lakers roster status
Hi Bagumba, are we supposed to remove him from {{Los Angeles Lakers roster}} and {{Los Angeles Lakers current roster}} since he's in the G-League? Left guide (talk) 08:02, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- If it makes any difference, I just realized the "roster" template (but not the "current roster" template) has a "(GL)" designation in the legend which says
On assignment to G League affiliate
, but it is not currently being used on Bronny's name there. Left guide (talk) 08:09, 10 November 2024 (UTC)- I'm not very active in updating those templates, but my understanding is that a 2-way player is left on the NBA roster, since they still have a contract with them. Does "assigned" technically apply to 2-way players, or only standard contract players? —Bagumba (talk) 09:26, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Left guide: Ack, I just remembered Bronny is on a reg contract, so I guess he could be marked "assigned". —Bagumba (talk) 09:28, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I don't think I know the answer to that question, hence why I am asking you. Has there ever been a consensus reached in the NBA project for handling this type of situation? I poked through some of the style guides, subpages, and WT:NBA archives but couldn't find anything specific about this. And yeah, I believe he has an NBA contract, don't know if that makes a difference for this issue. Left guide (talk) 09:42, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Left guide: It could be one of those de facto processes. Remember WP is WP:NOTBURO (but I often throw things in WP:NBASTYLE because I hate having to search and shortcuts make handy references). Getting back to Bronny, "assigned" applies here, independent of 2-ways. —Bagumba (talk) 09:55, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I did find Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_33#How_to_reflect_2-way_contracts?, not a consensus per se, but ... —Bagumba (talk) 10:23, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- That discussion link is helpful, thank you. So if I am understanding correctly, the difference is the designation
(TW) Two-way affiliate player
is a player with a G-League contract who sometimes goes back and forth to the NBA team, and the designation(GL) On assignment to G League affiliate
is a player with an NBA contract who sometimes goes back and forth to the G-League team, yes? I hope I'm not confusing you, a lot of these details are new to me and I'm learning as I go. Left guide (talk) 10:38, 10 November 2024 (UTC)- Roughly. Two-way players are special NBA roster designations—they have an NBA contract, but are limited as to how many games they can play at the NBA level. They can spend time in the G League, and cannot play in the NBA playoff. Contrast with a standard NBA contract player, who in their first few years in the NBA can be assigned by their team to spend time in the G League. However, they have no restictions on how many games they can play in the NBA. —Bagumba (talk) 11:27, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- That discussion link is helpful, thank you. So if I am understanding correctly, the difference is the designation
- Possibly more of a note to myself, this T-wolves preview only mentioned "assignment" for non-2-way players:
—Bagumba (talk) 05:00, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Out: Daishen Nix, Jaylen Clark, Leonard Miller & Jesse Edwards
Daishen Nix (G League - Two-Way), Jaylen Clark (G League - Two-Way), Leonard Miller (G League - On Assignment) and Jesse Edwards (G League Two-Way) are out for the Wolves.- Yeah, it's a pretty clear distinction to me by now, after reading up and learning more since starting this thread. Left guide (talk) 05:26, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

Opinion
What's your opinion on the hockey infobox? Examples: Wayne Gretzky, Alexander Ovechkin ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 17:16, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- I don't really edit hockey. While the big 3 sports can go overboard with highlights, having none is just the other extreme. Not sure if that's what you're asking. —Bagumba (talk) 17:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- The hockey infobox doesn't even have year spans for the teams (it's in the table of contents I guess though). Also, Alexander Ovechkin's Stanley Cup win is buried in the 14th row of the honors table. And I can't even tell how many Stanley Cups Wayne Gretzky won. He doesn't even have an honors section, there's only a link to List of career achievements by Wayne Gretzky in the "Legacy" section. I can't blame them for having the infobox like that though, at least when there's nothing in the infobox, you don't have to argue with people. Readers might complain about the infobox on reddit though ([2][3]) ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 17:35, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- There'd be nothing to argue if there was no articles either. Sometime you just have to live with both the blessing and curse of dealing with a crowdsourced environment. —Bagumba (talk) 17:44, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- "
crowdsourcedsourced-by-the-same-few-people environment" Fixed that for you. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 17:50, 13 November 2024 (UTC)- I'm not so sure if there's that many more editors in the other projects. —Bagumba (talk) 17:58, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, Bagumba, I'll stop bugging you. I'm just joshing around. I'm not planning to start any discussions anyway. Something as simple as team years was shot down just last month at Template_talk:Infobox_ice_hockey_biography#Team_Years with not one person in support (besides the OP). ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:04, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry for being the killjoy. Maybe I'm reading too much Wooden these days: "Do not mistake activity for achievement." Can still get me riled up on former Americans tho. —Bagumba (talk) 18:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
- If you need more good reading, try the archives at Template talk:Infobox ice hockey biography. It's interesting stuff. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:28, 13 November 2024 (UTC)

Image copyright/licensing
Hey Bagumba, I know you coached me a while ago on image copyright and licensing for a couple of basketball images. When possible, would you mind taking a look at File:Backboard shattering.jpeg and providing feedback? I found it on Flickr and uploaded it here (the photo is from a 2009 minor league basketball game) because I believe it qualifies as fair use for backboard shattering, to improve that article. I don't do this type of thing often, so I want to be sure everything in the form is accurate to avoid deletion. A second opinion would really help and provide reassurance, thanks. Left guide (talk) 09:14, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Someone tagged it as WP:F7 with {{dnfu}} apparently claiming it fails the #1 criteria of no free alternative available, even though I searched for free images and couldn't find any. Left guide (talk) 09:30, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Left guide: Yeah, that tag says to "discuss the matter on the talk page", so that seems the route to go to discuss their concerns. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 09:34, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
DYK for Eddie Sheldrake
On 16 November 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Eddie Sheldrake, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that before selling chicken and pies, 5-foot-9-inch (1.75 m) Eddie Sheldrake broke UCLA's single-game scoring record in basketball? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Eddie Sheldrake. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Eddie Sheldrake), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Help with roster navboxes
Is there a way to summon a bot that would help with deletion nominations like at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2024 November 18#Basketball national team roster navboxes? I am asking, because there is quite a number of such navboxes at Category:Basketball Olympic squad navigational boxes by competition, Category:FIBA Basketball World Cup squad navigational boxes by competition, Category:Eurobasket squad navigational boxes and similar categories. – sbaio 19:53, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Sbaio: I am not aware of one, but I'm not that active with TfD either. Perhaps ask at WT:TFD. —Bagumba (talk) 13:50, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
MLB player teams box question
When updating the teams boxes for a player who was recently traded during the MLB offseason, how should I go adding the {{mlby}} template to their teams box? ReallyAmazingDude13 (talk) 22:30, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- @ReallyAmazingDude13: Not sure. Try WT:BASEBALL. —Bagumba (talk) 14:16, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
DYK
After all of our discussion, it got changed back to basically what I had originally, lol. I don't mind though. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 15:36, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: Yeah, I had those happened with one of mine too recently, where someone wanted only one simple thought. Plain ol noticed on the street doesn't do much for me. YMMV. —Bagumba (talk) 04:15, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- @WikiOriginal-9: FYI, if you have any additional thoughts with the lastest comments at Template:Did you know nominations/John Moore (basketball), which you reviewed of mine. Thanks. —Bagumba (talk) 04:22, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm, looks like AirshipJungleman29 is actually the same user who edited the Waltiea Rolle hook above, my Anne Marie Armstrong hook (I don't mind either of those edits though, both of them bring the hooks closer to what I had originally, LOL), and questioned another of mine at Template:Did you know nominations/Rich Romer. I'm honestly not sure what the problem is with your Moore hook. I thought it was interesting. There weren't very many Black student body presidents back then. Maybe they don't know what a student body president is? I thought everyone knew that, maybe it's just an American term... I'm not sure I should comment though, it might make it look like I'm mad because of the other stuff or something lol. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 13:14, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
Are you able to delete a page?
I created Template:San Diego Clippers (GL) roster trying to do a WP:SWAP from Template:San Diego Clippers (NBA G League) roster to Template:San Diego Clippers roster but realized after hitting enter that I had left a redirect. Can you delete Template:San Diego Clippers (GL) roster? Thanks for any help you can give. Rikster2 (talk) 19:43, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Rikster2: I dont do swaps too often, so took me a while to figure this out. It seems that you don't want a delete per se, but rather Template:San Diego Clippers (GL) roster moved to Template:San Diego Clippers (NBA G League) roster i.e. what used to be at Template:San Diego Clippers roster (before all your moves) should finally end up at Template:San Diego Clippers (NBA G League) roster. I competed that swap.
- The trick is to follow Wikipedia:Moving a page#Improved sequence, particularly the part about "without creating a redirect" (uncheck the box "Leave a redirect behind" on the move request). If you don't, then a redirect is created, which will ultimately block the final swap, then only an admin can delete that redirect. There's a script mentioned at WP:ROUNDROBIN, which might make all this easier.
- Hopefully I did this right. If not, let me know. —Bagumba (talk) 02:51, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Rikster2: I just noticed that the G League team page is at San Diego Clippers (NBA G League), not San Diego Clippers. I haven't done any homework (nor have any plans to) on the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC here, but the move reason of "There needs to be a parenthetical notation in order to distinguish between the parent NBA team & the NBA G League team for color code purposes" seems like the least important consideration, and there's anyways probably other alternatives if it was a real issue. —Bagumba (talk) 03:51, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
More questionable Triple Crown redirects
Hey again, if you look here, there are additional ambiguous redirects similar to the one you dealt with that maybe should also be retargeted to the Triple Crown disambiguation page. Of particular concern are United States Triple Crown, American Triple Crown, and American triple crown. What do you think? Left guide (talk) 23:06, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Left guide; When I originally dealt with Triple Crown winners, it seemed like the initial Google hits were to horse racing, so I left the redirect as is, but just updated the hatnote. I don't feel too strongly on these, so feel free to adjust any of those, as needed. —Bagumba (talk) 01:09, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
