Hovak Johnston

[edit]

Hi, my friend. I remembered our last conversation after it was archived. How are you doing? I was going to ask whether you've made any movement on writing about Hovak Johnston. Like I said, I don't know much about Canadian Inuit history or people (my interest is more in women of Greenland and the American plains), but if you haven't started yet and we are both in the mood for writing about Johnston some time, let me know and I'll try to help. And please keep in touch with whatever new things you are up to; I learn so much reading your engaging, careful, and thoughtful prose. For me, two new things: Gozel Shagulyeva, a Turkmen woman poet, and User:Urve/Poetry in judicial opinions, an exercise in novelty. Maybe we can learn a bit from the latter? Urve (talk) 06:49, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I say this, and only afterwards notice with excitement your writing about North Calotte People. Not Sámi herself, but an important figure in Sámi political representation is Astri Aasen - a biography you may find interesting, and which I wrote and had promoted to GA. Urve (talk) 06:52, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Urve! Finals season hit me like a brick, so I've been occcupied these past two weeks. I haven't really worked on it because of that, with intermittent moments when I got distracted from what I've been supposed to do (my bad). I would love to work together with you sometime, been working on all sorts of things as of late and I've never collaborated with anyone on an article before but that sounds like a lot of fun. That means a lot coming from you, and I can say for sure that I have learned quite a lot from your writing! Great work and congratulations on getting Aasen's article to GA status! Please let me know when you're able to, I just finished my exams last night! Ornithoptera (talk) 00:24, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It has been 6 months and I'm going to assume that you will not be doing any more work on this soon. I think it is best to move it back to mainspace let the Wikipedia community finish it. Thanks for all the work you put into it. ~Kvng (talk) 17:34, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Kvng:, apologies but please do not move it back at this point. I have just been quite busy with my current affairs, in addition to just some lingering exhaustion with the process surrounding the page. I would appreciate some patience on the matter while I try and finish the page when the time is right. There are still some concerns regarding the layout I would like to address regardless, including how the current intro paragraph wasn't meant to be an intro in the first place, but was repurposed by another user. New article Esther Tailfeathers

[edit]

Hey, Ornithoptera! I've just created Esther Tailfeathers, how would you feel about inserting it into the hook about Bjarne Store-Jakobsen? It's possible we could see if someone would be willing to review fast for a double-target hook, too. Maybe something like

Val

  • Hi @Valereee:! This is outstanding news! It's always great to see more articles on folks who definitely needed them and Tailfeathers was definitely an individual who I would have made an article for if I had the time, so I'm more than delighted to see you have taken up the mantle. I would be more than happy to do a joint nomination but since the hook has been approved I'm a bit unsure as to how to go about that. If you have any idea to that would save us some time. Maybe re-inserting "mythical love story" could be my two cents on adjusting the hook, if you have ever seen Bihttoš for yourself, it is a very fairytale-esque story. Ornithoptera (talk) 19:02, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to reinstate that. I'll nom to DYK and do a QPQ, and I think it might be okay if you'd review it, if you're willing -- you aren't involved with the article but are familiar with the sources/content -- which would get it reviewed quickly. Then we can post to WT:DYK to see if we can get the hook adjusted. Valereee (talk) 19:45, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to be quite familiar with the WT:DYK process so if you would be able to handle that, that would be much appreciated! I would be more than happy to review the Esther Tailfeathers nomination of course.
I am concerned if it may raise some eyebrows to any admin who sees the article and assume it is me reviewing an article that goes in our DYK contribution, but if you are familiar with the procedure around it and see no issue I wouldn't mind doing so. I am familiar with Tailfeathers' contributions so this should be perfectly fine, as long as there is no problems that may arise. Ornithoptera (talk) 19:51, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll explain it transparently, and if anyone objects we can ask for another reviewer. Valereee (talk) 19:55, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me, feel free to give me a heads up when you have completed the nomination.
Again I cannot express my delight and I cannot express my gratitude enough that you have taken up the initiative to create Tailfeathers' article. You've done great work with it and I'm more than happy to have done this joint-nomination with you. Ornithoptera (talk) 19:58, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so glad! Sometimes I am a little reticent to suggest a dual-target because it inevitably means there'll be some effect on the initial target, but I figure if Bjarne is the first link, it probably won't matter much, and the hook is so much stronger that it might even help. :) Thanks for your kind words. I've completed the nom at Template:Did you know nominations/Esther Tailfeathers and asked a question at WT:DYK I pinged you to. Valereee (talk) 20:56, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hey, Ornithoptera! A reviewer at the nom has a question about how the film is described at the three articles. As it is apparently not available for me to screen, could you take a look at those three sections and see if you can make any needed corrections? Valereee (talk) 13:19, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Valereee! I've tried my best to respond to the questions accordingly, seems like quite a bit has been discussed so I've done my best to address CMD's questions but if I've missed anything I have left it open to address any outstanding questions.
If you need a good summary from an academic source just in case, there is Elsewheres of Healing, which has been a bit of a hassle to link for some weird reason. You are welcome to adjust the sources to include it if needed. Ornithoptera (talk) 17:02, 6 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thank you! I had tried to get to that before and couldn't figure out why it seemed to be some sort of dead link! Very interesting! Valereee (talk) 14:47, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was really weird honestly. I accessed the article through google scholar and the link to the article is a link to the pdf on the site, but for some reason using the link results in a 404 error no matter where you access it from. I have no idea the mechanics behind such an error like that but it's been pretty consistent. Regardless the HTML link seems to be more stable but I wish there was a more accessible PDF version that we could use instead. Ornithoptera (talk) 19:09, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I finally managed by using the doi to create the citation in VisEd. Check Esther Tailfeathers and see if that's working for you. Valereee (talk) 12:03, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great job Valereee! Seems like that should be accessible (albeit requiring download from my end unless I have an account), but still accessible! Just wanted to express my joy in working with you on this, thank you so much! Ornithoptera (talk) 18:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so glad, and ditto! It's always great to find editors you can easily work with! Valereee (talk) 16:42, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2024 SA election forks

[edit]

Hello, I see you have created two new articles 2024 South African provincial elections and Results of the 2024 South African general election. Could you please adequately explain your exact reasoning for doing this? We have had the results for the SA election articles just under a section for all the past election articles, so I don't see why this would be any different. Please reply to my comment on the talk page of the Results of the 2024 South African general election article. Thank you. Flemmish Nietzsche (talk) 20:11, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, 2024 South African provincial elections. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Results of the 2024 South African general election. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Results of the 2024 South African general election. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 14:55, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citogenesis

[edit]

Congratulations on your Good Article Nomination! The concern you mentioned about an online Encyclopedia copying from Wikipedia is called Citogenesis and it sometimes can result in made up facts ending up in secondary source, and then that being used to prove the claim. Autopatrolled granted

[edit]

Hi Ornithoptera, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! – Joe (talk) 14:19, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sonovawolf, wonderful work for a new Wikipedian! I hope you have a wonderful time on DYK and I wish you nothing but the best. I will take a look at the article in the upcoming days depending on my availability. In terms of answering your other question, Earwig is a copyright violation tool to help notice anything that was too closely paraphrased or even copied from sources within and beyond the article. It can be a very helpful tool if you consider reviewing an article for DYK. Feel free to ask me anything you would like down the line, and I would be more than happy to help guide you! Ornithoptera (talk) 10:13, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thank you!
If you don't mind I'd love your take on something. There was a discussion in Woody Minnich, see my latest message here: Talk:Woody Minnich#c-Sonovawolf-20241124081800-Johnnydowns-20240525023000 (btw you seem interested in indigenous topics, he is 1/64 Sac and Fox!).
I'm unclear on how to proceed, because it's not an active dispute… I caved in and made the changes some months ago. I still don't feel that mentioning the charges is the right way to go, and if it is, I'm wondering if they have too much detail/presence as they stand. I'd like a "third opinion" on it, but it would be a "fourth opinion" because 2 editors are already involved, so I can't use Wikipedia:Third opinion. I would normally be ok with just leaving it as it is because 2 people have already weighed in, but as you can see from the comment I linked I think their behavior may be a little suspicious or biased. I want to be extra careful because it's a Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons.
Should I open an RFC following this: Wikipedia:Requests for comment? Sonovawolf (talk) 20:44, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sonovawolf, a few comments here regarding this. First of all, connection to a specific community is more central to Indigeneity than genetic descent. This is an important note to keep in mind in the future, and is a great opportunity to learn. Kim TallBear has some very well put statements on the matter here, if you want to further your research.
In my view, it is not unreasonable to include it. It is a brief few sentences that states the facts quite objectively, and covered by third party sources, in my view. They were found on the premises, and he was fined. In terms of WP:BLPCRIME, it is not in violation of that. If you still have continued concerns, I would say that WP:BLPN is probably a much more relevant venue than RFC. However, I haven’t had much experience in either, so the decision is up to you at the end of the day.
I hope this is helpful, you are more than welcome to forward me any inquiries in the future and I’ll do my best to provide my insight. Ornithoptera (talk) 19:52, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the link. I realize now that my comment about genetics oversimplifies Indigenous identity. I appreciate your patience! Sonovawolf (talk) 20:15, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! Glad this can be a learning opportunity for you. Since I have you here, I see that you are quite passionate about succulents. I would love to collaborate with you on an article regarding them down the line in the future. I’ve written about plants, desert plants even (Tulbaghia, Lapeirousia, and Ornithoglossum come to mind), but nothing thus far about a succulent species. If you ever have any in mind you might want to see collaboration on, do let me know! Ornithoptera (talk) 20:19, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll let you know if I ever find a worthy topic that isn't already covered :) Sonovawolf (talk) 20:31, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful! Regardless, I hope you have a wonderful time editing and enjoy DYK! I hope that you can find some clarity with Minnich’s article. Wishing the best! Ornithoptera (talk) 20:33, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Muthkwey

[edit]

On 5 December 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Muthkwey, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that muthkwey was not harvested or walked over, because oral tradition held that it had grown from the droppings of a two-headed serpent? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Muthkwey. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Muthkwey), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
