Vami's sister announced his passing on the Wikimedia Discord. I'll have more to say in this thread later but Vami built an incredible content portfolio over the years and it'll be staying here for a long time. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 17:26, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Quarter-Million Award for bringing Doom (2016 video game) (estimated annual readership: 278,000) to Good Article status. • I only found out of Vami's passing the other day, and was at a complete loss for words. 24 is no age at all... I'll remember him fondly from the Wikimedia Discord, where we had such a good laugh about the more humorous side of Wikipedia only last month, and for all the fantastic work he did for this project. Rest in peace. :-( Patient Zerotalk 00:54, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I didn't know Vami IV, we worked in different areas of the project, but I've been around here for over 10 years and I've never seen this extensive tribute to a Wikipedia editor in my time here. Clearly evidence not only to the quality of his work but his ability to work well with other editors (which at times I think is even more valuable of a skill). You will clearly be missed by many who appreciated your talents. Liz Read! Talk! 03:39, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am terribly sorry to hear about this news.Vami was an exceptional editor and a boon to this encyclopedia. I deeply regret not having the time to get to know him better, but from what I recall he was an indefatigable, cordial, and tireless contributor with a delightful personality. He was kind to newcomers and his dedication to completionism of a broad range of articles was nothing short of inspiring. He passed too young, but his contributions shall remain engrained in Wikipedia forever. Rest in peace Vami.

This was the last project Vami started, a few days ago. It would be nice to see, if it was brought to completion. It looks like he was probably envisioning an article about this story.

Other projects in Vami_IV's memory

[edit]

Several people off-wiki have mentioned the prospect of an article improvement in Vami's memory. As GreenC mentioned above, Vami had an incomplete sandbox for the 2020-2022 catalytic converter theft ring.

I'll list a few other collaborations/projects that were mentioned:

Any other suggestions for article improvements in Vami's memory are appreciated. – Epicgenius (talk) 17:17, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Arizona wildfires to FL to cap off a featured/good topic, since Vami brought six articles from that year to FA or GA status. There are four other possibly notable fires from that year (Hilltop Fire, Burro Fire, Brooklyn Fire, and Hyde Fire) that might need to be brought to GA or FA. I haven't looked at the sources to know for sure. I am in the process of making maps for each. -- Guerillero Parlez Moi 17:53, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to try to get Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Fort McKavett State Historic Site (Vami's open nomination) across the A-Class finish line. Based on this conversation, I'm also going to dedicate a project to get Battle of Poison Spring to FA to their memory. Hog Farm Talk 18:01, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
when he & i worked on Gates of Heaven Synagogue, he expressed interest in working on an article about the broader history of the Jewish community in Madison. the draft is located at User:Sawyer-mcdonell/History of the Jews in Madison, Wisconsin, if anyone is interested in helping me out with the project.
some of his other future projects were Great Hanging at Gainesville (his draft here), Texas during the American-Indian wars, and the Palace of Versailles, which he abandoned working on, but still very much cared about. he also wanted to get Simón Bolívar to FA, but abandoned that goal due to not being able to effectively use Spanish-language sources; a Spanish-speaking editor(s) might want to help with that one. another few editors have decided to take up his goal of writing an article for every Texas county courthouse. i will come back to this later & add more sawyer * he/they * talk 18:28, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:Vami_IV/Archive8#Articles to be checked for copyvio. The short version is that articles about modern South Korean society and culture are a terrible mess of translation copyvios, socking, poor writing, and subpar sourcing. I tried to fix a few of them but it more than I was able to handle at the time, and a large-scale community initiative would probably be needed to check and clean all the articles of copyvio. @Ixtal I didn't want to nominate it for a specific date at the time because the only mention of a birthday I could find was this but I wasn't too certain about it.
